Introducing Our Safer Living Resource Hub

At Mums of the Hills, we believe safety shouldn't be a privilege, it should be something every woman and girl feels in her day-to-day life.

Over the past few months, we’ve been running free self-defence classes across the Yarra Ranges. These events weren’t about martial arts or fitness, they were about building practical confidence. Simple, powerful techniques that could make all the difference when walking to your car, out with friends, or navigating an uncomfortable situation.

We heard from mums who wanted to feel safer on evening walks. From teens who wanted to learn how to hold their ground. From women of all ages who wanted to stop feeling powerless. And so, these sessions were born, and they’ve been incredible.

Thanks to the amazing community response, we’ve now pulled together a new Safer Living page in the Resouces section of our website. It’s a space where you can:

  • Watch demonstration videos from past self-defence sessions (filmed and shared by attendees)

  • Read articles and resources about personal safety

  • Learn what these classes are really about

  • Find out how to book into future events

These videos are a way to keep practicing, share with others, or just remind yourself of what’s possible when you back yourself. Please note: they’re designed to be a guide, not a full training session, so be mindful if practicing at home.

This is just the beginning. We’d love to bring these sessions to more local towns — but to do that, we need your support. Book in, spread the word, and help us build a stronger, safer community for all.

A massive thanks to David from Upwey TKD for facilitating these events and forward the useful articles for us to share. Funding for this initiative was provided through our Empowering Women project through the COVID and Storm Recovery grant and so a huge thanks goes to Yarra Ranges Council and Bendigo Bank for their ongoing support.
