Project title: Exploring the Impact of Climate Change on Maternal and Child Health in Australia - Participatory Workshop

Project ID: 45150

Chief Investigator’s name :  A/Prof Zerina Lokmic-Tomkins, School of Nursing and Midwifery. Phone: +61 3 9905 0819. email: zerina.tomkins@monash.edu

You’re invited to join this research project by Monash University to understand how climate change (heatwaves, fires, floods, storms) is affecting the health, safety and care of pregnant women, new mums and young children in Australia and what needs to happen next.

To do that, A/Prof Zerina Lokmic-Tomkins is bringing together people who see this from different angles: community members, clinicians, service providers, researchers, council/government and community organisations, for a one-off workshop.

What you’ll do

  • Join one half-day, in-person workshop

  • Hear a short overview of what we already know about climate change and maternal and child health vulnerability

  • Take part in a structured group discussion about what’s happening for mums, babies and young children

  • Help us identify the most urgent research and policy priorities

Why we want you
You’ve either:

  • worked with maternal and child health/family services,

  • planned or coordinated services for families,

  • researched climate or health, or

  • experienced climate impacts yourself (e.g. heat, smoke, floods, fires) during pregnancy or with a young child and can speak to what helped or didn’t.

What’s in it for you

  • Be part of setting a national research agenda on maternal and child health and climate change

  • Connect with others working on/experiencing the same issues

  • Community members will receive $100 for taking part

  • Lunch/refreshments provided and parking reimbursed

Your input
Discussions will be audio-recorded so we don’t miss anything, but will be summarised and de-identified in any reports or publications. You can also tell us if something is “off the record.”

Who’s running it
This project is funded internally by Monash University’s School of Nursing and Midwifery and led by A/Prof Zerina Tomkins. No external sponsors, no conflicts of interest.
